Bevolo Gas and Electric Lights
There is no doubt that people from across the globe recognize the beauty of Bevolo Light Fixtures. Their custom-made copper fixtures have become a symbol of New Orleans since 1945, adorning many of the Big Easy’s most cherished landmarks, hotels, and restaurants. Located in the heart of the French Quarter, the family-owned business employs 49 people, and has an international customer base.
The company first approached MEPOL a few years ago for assistance in increasing production without increasing personnel. MEPOL answered the call with introducing the concept of assembly line production. This change resulted in their throughput increasing nearly 30 percent.
So when the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina reduced their workforce, causing a backlog of orders, Bevolo knew just where to turn. Utilizing the federal hurricane assistance grant money, MEPOL conducted a Hurricane Discovery Assessment, and led Bevolo in the right direction to recovery with two Lean Manufacturing classes and Quickbooks for Manufacturing software training. The production facility layout was also improved with organized workstations and the implementation of standardized work. The results were tremendous. Bevolo experienced a 50 percent reduction in lead time, and its returned merchandise rates were cut in half. Mark Johnson, production facility manager, states, “These recent changes have allowed Bevolo to not only catch up with past orders, but also reduce the lead time between order and ship dates.” He continues, “MEPOL brought to us fresh ideas from an objective point of view. They offered to work with us, not just point out our problem areas. We still have their support, just a phone call away.”
